About Otsu
Otsu is a city in southern Shiga Prefecture and the prefecture's capital. 1,300 years ago, albeit briefly, it was the capital of Japan. Later, when the capital was moved to Kyoto, Otsu developed into a gateway city to eastern Japan and as a central city for land and water transportation systems.

Otsu became a center for Buddhism since many major temples, such as Enryakuji on Mt. Hiei, were located. This temple was established 1,200 yeas ago and is a scared place for Buddhism in Japan and registered as a World Cultural Heritage site. Other famous temple, the Ukimido Floating Temple, constructed about 1,000 years ago, is a representative scenic spot in Otsu. It is famous for having been built on stilts high above Lake Biwa as one of the Omi Hakkei (Eight views of Omi). Also, Ishiyama-dera, founded in 749, belonging to the Shingon Buddhist Sect, is the 13th temple of the Saigoku Pilgrimage. Lady Murasaki Shikibu is said to have written the epic novel, "A Tale of Genji" in a room at this temple where is a major tourist attraction with National Treasurer Building.

Adjacent to Kyoto (10 minutes by train), Otsu occupies almost the entire southern shore of Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake.

The city's skyscraper building, the Otsu Prince Hotel is located by Lake Biwa, provides a panoramic view of the lake and city, will make it the most suitable place for the upcoming conference.
